Other best picture noms include, "Babel," which simply begged for the award and really could not be awarded the statue because it came off as a little disappointing in both its presentation and award friendly demeanor, but also, the other, most egregious error in the nomination category (this designation suggesting that while none of the films deserved the award, their nomination were easily justified) was "Little Miss Sunshine." The film took a few awards tonight, but honestly, deserved none. However, "The Departed," more than deserved everything for which it won. Thankfully, instead of honoring horrible films like last year's "Crash" or potential winner, "Little Miss Sunshine," the Academy did the right thing and thought with their minds and not with political guilt.

Honestly, for the most part, the awards were delivered appropriately and to a tee, but let us talk about those awards, which were so erroneously given to the incorrect recipient, that I was left scratching my head. First, in the category of Best Foreign Film, the award was given to Germany's "The Lives of Others," as opposed to Guillermo Del Toro's, often lauded - especially tonight - "Pan's Labyrinth." I simply cannot understand how a film, which, in addition to "Children of Men," should have been nominated for best picture, doesn't win in the category it so clearly and easily dominates. "Pan's Labyrinth" was not only a hit in Spain and other countries, but consistently placed in the box office top 10 - in the United States, no less! Let me stress that this is a foreign film; meaning people who go to see it will have to read. Frankly, no one here has ever heard of "The Lives of Others." The exclusion of "Pan's Labyrinth" from being one of the recipients of the golden statue is more than wrong,.

Secondly and, perhaps, ironically, the award of Best Cinematography went to "Pan's Labyrinth," but more appropriately should have gone to fellow Mexican director Alfonso Cuaron's "Children of Men." For the single most impressive, one take scene in over a decade. Coupled with the gorgeous heavy filters and shifted frame speeds, "Children of Men," more than any other film, this year, deserved the award for its astonishing and powerful cinematography.

Finally, the most erroneous mistake made this evening was the exclusion of Mark Wahlberg, for his career-defining role in "The Departed." Instead, the Academy, wrongly chose to honor Alan Arkin for his minimal and perhaps, ham fisted, portrayal of a heroin smoking grandfather in the most overrated film of the year. Whalberg, with his performance, was able to bridge the gap between his detractors and his fans. He produced, in his character, strength and individuality that was truly above the rest of the characters in the film and with it, a performance that rivaled all of those involved. Arkin, on the other hand, who is a great actor and does have decades of strong and career defining performances behind him, played the role to the best of his abilities, with the tools that he was given. Unfortunately, Arkin - and the rest of his cast - were given the weakest script to honestly make it all the way to this night. He, and frankly, everyone else in that film were given nothing note worthy to do and I honestly cannot recall a single frame of that film that could possibly overtake the exuberance and joy the Wahlberg brought to his role.

Although the detractions to the evening that I just listed were upsetting, it is nice to note that Martin Scorsese, American's greatest director, finally was honored with his first Oscar. Also, it should be mentioned that host Ellen DeGeneres did a phenomenal job, far better than John Stewart and Chris Rock did in previous years and certainly better than the abhorrent Whoopi Goldberg did in all her times hosting. While the runtime was long, running from 5:30 pm to 9:16 pm PST, it was also relaxed and enjoyable.

Finally, after years and years of mistakes, The Academy Awards ends by putting a much-deserved smile on my face and the faces of thousands of Scorsese fans and supporters. I experienced this error recently and spent an eternity trying to resolve it.  I finally found the solution to my problem and wanted to document it for others.

For me, the issue only appeared when I tried to invite people to a scheduled meeting.  Under normal circumstances, blank (no invitees) scheduled meetings worked fine.  Ad-hoc meetings worked fine.  Some invitees worked, but others did not.  When an invitee caused the issue to appear, this message would be displayed either when I saved/sent the meeting, or tried to set an invitee as a meeting leader.

It turned out to be caused by the format of the invitee information.  Typically, on an Exchange-based email network, your global address book contains all the people within your company.  Sometimes, emails will get sent around that results in employee names being displayed something like My Name <my.name@company.com> instead of just My Name.  These entries can get cached in a frequent recipient list that will pop down when entering addressees.

Well, it turns out this format causes the Conferencing Add-In to barf.  When entering recipients into a LiveMeeting request, entries in this format (as opposed to the usual Exchange My Name format) will cause something somewhere to fail, resulting in this message.  Keep in mind that the name will look correct in the To: field, even though “behind the scenes” it’s actually the lengthy format above.

To resolve, either select a user from the Global Address Book when entering attendees or remove the entry for the cached list by hitting Ctrl-Delete while the name is highlighted in the list.  Then enter a name, force a lookup on the user (“Check Names”), and all should be well.

If a syntax error is found when calling a custom made function or sub make sure it was correctly created and defined. Note: the spelling of commands and functions is not case sensitive in DarkBasic Professional.

I like the interface that Drive XML has, it's very easy to understand, they have Backup, Restore, Drive to Drive, and Browse. That is pretty easy to understand, and if you don't get it then you might want to leave the computer magic to the pros. Drive XML is also one of the fastest backup software's I have ever used, at least the fastest free one. It backed up my 40 gig drive in about 12 minutes, not to shabby, and the restore of the drive was about the same.

A few drawbacks to Drive XML, first and the problem I ran into that I didn't expect, you can only restore to a drive that is the same size or bigger than your original drive. Even if the data is smaller than the drive you are restoring to, it doesn't matter the way Drive XML performs the operation it won't write to a smaller drive. This can pose a huge problem for anyone wanting to use this program on a mass quantity of hard drives. If this is your plan make sure you make your first image on the smallest drive available otherwise you will have issues later on. Drive XML won't let you write the data to a CD or DVD either, which would be a great convenience but is outside of the scope of the program at this point in time.

These drawbacks to Drive XML are problems but they don't make the program useless you can work around the issue. The best use I have found for the program is on my home system with dual drives. I have two hard drives one for my OS and the other is storage, well I backed up my OS onto my secondary hard drive, when ever my system crashes I can simply restore it to the last good state. Takes me 15 minutes where it could take me hours to reinstall windows and reload all of my programs. This has saved me a lot of time. Also Drive XML has a feature where you can do periodic backups, you just schedule a time (say over night while I am asleep) and it will backup my system, do this every week or so and you never have to worry about your system crashing, and if it does you know you are well protected.

Drive XML has a decent website (http://www.runtime.org) where you can find information on the program and a good FAQ with some helpful hints and tricks. They also will answer questions via email but support is limited being this is a free tool. The website also has some other awesome free tools; one in particular that I liked was GetDataBack, which is a tool that can recover lost or corrupt data on a hard drive. This tool seems to be the programmer's main point of focus now and for good reason. The websites best section is the How To... section that gives in great detail how to use some of the products they offer, this can be a great help to first time users. The website also has a lot of other tools and information that is totally free so it can't hurt to check it out it won't cost you anything.

Well that is Drive XML in a nutshell, this is seriously a great tool, and Drive XML has many uses and is totally free. If you are familiar with Ghost it can do most of the same things as Ghost and is slightly faster, and you won't have to spend any money for Drive XML. If you haven't noticed I like to drive the point home that these programs I love so much are free! I just want to give you all the best tools for your computer needs, especially when they are free tools. Everyone likes to save money but a lot of people don't realize that there are free tools that will do many of the same things as programs that cost hundreds of dollars. Even if you don't like Drive XML at least it won't cost you anything to find out that it isn't what you needed or wanted.

I just got a new TomTom XL330s and have been enjoying it so far. However, I'm having problems with TomTom home. I attempted to update and install QuickGPSfix



Home gave me an error about writing the lto.dat file in the ephem folder. Then the installation failed for the program. So, I believe that the program is a corrupted download on the unit. I also have not been able to delete that folder.

So, is there a way I can either reinstall this program, or delete it from the TomTom's memory? I have a QuickGPSfix folder on my computer, with 3 small files in it. Is there a place I can copy these onto the XL and make the program work?

Installing Hardwood Stairs - After spending more than 10 years in the hardwood flooring industry, doing countless flooring jobs, I will say with at least some authority that doing stairs correctly is no easy task. Depending on your skill level as a woodworker, this project is about a 4 on a scale of 1 to 5, 5 being the most difficult. What makes it hard is not the labor, it's the skill. Now there are ways to "skip" steps and make it easier, but being a professional, I cannot justify that.

Step 1: Prep

Remove the existing carpet or treads. If carpet was on your staircase, you will find plywood treads and risers on the stringers. Stringers are the forms that were installed when the house was built, the foundation of the staircase. Some websites will tell you to leave these plywood pieces on, some will not. Personally, I prefer to remove them in most scenarios. The reason for this is because if you are purchasing treads, they are already milled to a thickness of 1-1/6" and are the right height to create a safe tread and riser combination.

Occasionally, I had seen where a builder has installed faulty stringers and the stairs have too much rise on them, so they build up the tread with plywood to reduce the span of the rise. If this is the case in your home, you may want to bag the DIY idea and hire a professional, for safety reasons.

Remove all nails or screws protruding from the stringers. Using a palm sander, hand sander, or even a sanding block, remove any glue or dirt buildup on the stringers. You want the bare wood exposed and in good shape, this will help you get a better adhesion from the glue in a later step.

Step 2: Measure

Professional installers carry with them a neat little tool called a stair wizard. Professionals who have been doing stairs long enough tend to make their own "wizard". What the tool does is creates the ability to make your stair treads to be marked precisely as they should fit. The reason this is important is because walls are rarely, if ever, straight. So if you have a 42" stair tread, your actual measurements may be something like this:

1 1=41 15/16"

2 2=41-1/6"

Now this picture is grossly not to scale, but it represents what I mean by not being straight. A stair wizard fits onto the stringer, extends to the walls, the installer tightens all the screws on the wizard, and you have a perfect match to cut your tread.

You can generally pick up a stair wizard for about $150. Here is a link to find out more about the wizard.

You will want to do this for every tread and every riser you are installing, whether it is a hardwood riser or a painted MDF riser. Mark each tread and riser, starting from the bottom of the stairway. Label each tread/riser 1, 2, 3...and so on until you reach the top of the stairs. DO NOT CUT THEM YET! We are going to practice the carpenter's rule #1. Measure twice, cut once. So now let's go back and do it all again. After you screw up a measurement on a few treads and have to buy more, you will appreciate the carpenter's rule, or at least your pocketbook will.

Step 3: Cut

I use a worm drive circular saw. I had a business partner who used a table saw. My grandfather used a handsaw. I would hesitate to tell you to use a specific saw if you are not comfortable with it. Whichever saw you use the best will work the best to cut the treads straight. So grab your saw of choice and cut tread #1, and only tread #1. Once cut, go see if it fits. You will want to do this frequently to make sure you cut right.

Also, when cutting, remember carpenter's rule #2. You can always cut more off, but you can't add moron. In other words, be conservative when cutting.

Step 4: Finish

There is some controversy here about finishing the tread and riser prior to installation, but from my experience, it looks much nicer to finish the wood prior to install. In a later step, you will be adding more finish.

Depending on the finish you use, and for a DIY project, I recommend polyurethane like Minwax; you will want to seal the wood. The nice thing about polyurethane is that you do not need a separate wood sealer.

So apply one coat of finish to the stairs and allow them to dry completely. This will take 2-3 days. My suggestion if you are doing this as a DIY project, do steps 1-4 on your 1st weekend, and complete the project the next weekend. This allows the finish a week to cure before being handled and/or walked on.

Step 5: Install

On the stringers, place a liberal amount of adhesive, a good all purpose construction adhesive works fine. No need to go buy the more expensive stuff that says it is formulated for hardwood, it's all marketing.

Using the open space where the riser will go and a good sharp pencil, mark on your tread the exact center of the stringers. Using a square, draw a line the full length width of the tread using your mark as the starting point. Now on those lines, mark with your pencil a sash at 4" and at 8". Where those lines intersect, you are going to want to drill holes for your screws and plugs.

Plugs come in an array of species and sizes. I recommend using a ½" or 3/8" plug. . Most treads you will purchase are oak, so you can find oak plugs. Make sure to identify whether you have red oak or white oak though, or they will not match. Depending on your décor, you can try using a different species altogether, like walnut. This gives you a beautiful contrast on your stairs.

Make sure that whatever size plug you choose you have the same size speed bore (drill bit).

Measure the depth of the plug; this is important that you are accurate. So measure it multiple times. Then measure the same distance up your drill bit and mark with a pencil. Using duct tape, wrap up the bit good and thick so that the only exposed part is what will be in contact with the tread. This acts as a guide so that you can drill at the same depth every time. You can get by without this if your drill by chance has a depth guide on it, but most affordable drills do not. Important to note that you are NOT drilling all the way through the tread, just enough to cover the plug.

Another option, for those who have the equipment, is to using a drill press to make these holes.

You should have 4 holes drilled on the tread, maybe 6 if you decide to put them on the center stringer. It is not necessary and creates extra work and increases the margin for error, so I recommend leaving the center alone. Now take the 2-1/4" wood screws and screw them snug into the stringer through the holes you just made, drop a bit of wood glue in the hole and cover with your plug. Wipe any excess glue off that seeps up from your plug. If the plug does not fit entirely flush, that's ok; you will be sanding it down. If the plug is too low, carefully dig it out and add more glue. Also add to the glue some wood shavings from your saw. This creates additional height just fine.

The risers are easy compared to the treads. Apply glue to the stringers; set the riser in place, tap in (or use the air gun) a couple of finish nails along the top and along the bottom. If your riser is warped at all, you can use a small screw, no larger that 1 ¼" long, and drill into the bottom of the riser, from the back side, and into the tread.

Repeat process up the stairwell.

Step 6: Final Coat

Using your palm sander from earlier, sand down the plugs, if needed. Using a high grit screen, like 220, lightly screen the entire tread. Tack (wipe with a damp cloth) the tread and make sure it is clean. Allow it to dry completely and put another layer of finish on. You can tell your spouse that the smell will go away, and you can tell them I said so.

One final touch I like to do it to get a bottle of clear caulk and put a small bead caulk line between the tread and riser and between the tread and the wall. Obviously this is done after the finish coat has completely dried, in about 2-3 days. Make sure to smooth out the caulk line. When finished it is barely noticeable. The reason I do this is because these are the areas where dirt is most likely to build up and cause those pesky dirt lines that are miserable to clean. Not only that, but it is a feature that very few professionals even think about doing, so it makes you look like a genius. You can tell your friends that too!

Step 7: Invite

Speaking of friends, now is the time to invite your friends and family over and show off your new staircase. Crack open the bottle of chardonnay and celebrate, because one more project is crossed off the list.

   The CapturedUsingVersion is used to determine which filesystem macros need to be expanded. Some extra macros were introduced in late Thinstall 3.3 versions, e.g. %Program Files Common%.

   
   

   Suppose the application installer created a file C:Program FilesCommon FilesAppFile.ext. Since you captured this using 4.0.3 that file will get stored in the project as %Program Files Common%AppFile.ext. With the CapturedUsingVersion setting intact, when the virtual app tries to open C:Program FilesCommon FilesAppFile.ext, this will get translated to %Program Files Common%AppFile.ext. That file exists in the project and everything works fine. Now, when you remove the CapturedUsingVersion, the runtime assumes the project was captured with an old Thinstall version which didn’t support the %Program Files Common% macro. So when the virtual app tries to open C:Program FilesCommon FilesAppFile.ext the runtime will translate it to %ProgramFilesDir%Common FilesAppFile.ext. That file does not exist in the project and the open fails.

   
   

   If you really had captured the app with that “ancient” Thinstall version, the file would have been stored as %ProgramFilesDir%Common FilesAppFile.ext, which is the path the runtime would use when there was no CapturedUsingVersion or when the CapturedUsingVersion setting indicated the old version.

Thanks for taking the time to read this, I'm about 8 hours into trying to work this out and while I feel I'm fairly close to getting the job done, 95% is as good as nothing.



We have a single server environment which is Windows Server 2003 SP2 (and is fully patched), running Exchange 2003 SP2. Internal clients and external clients who use the VPN have no issues, the server is working fine. The issue arises when trying to connect remotely using RPC over HTTPS. Outlook is always 2007 and the clients are mainly XP SP3, with some Vista SP1, no Windows 7.



When setting up the SSL and RPC, I followed 2 guides on this site:

As far as I can tell, everything went through fine. Indeed, if I use https://www.testexchangeconnectivity.com and perform the "Outlook Anywhere (RPC over HTTP)" test, it says everything completes fine.



That, however, is where the good stops. On the same site, if I run the "Exchange ActiveSync" test, that fails as below:

When I try and create a profile in Outlook 2007 to the server, I get continually prompted to enter a username and password, even though I'm entering valid details. Sometimes the external FQDN of exchange.xxxxxx.co.uk gets resolved to the internal FQDN of servername.domain.local and the username is underlined, sometimes not. This is still the case when I've been into 'More Settings' and set up Exchange over RPC.



Finally, when launching Outlook with this /rpcdiag switch, I get asked for a username and password again, only see 1 line in the connection status box (which stays on a status of 'Connecting') and can't see the mailbox.



Once this is working I believe the iPhones will also be able to work properly as they use the same or very similar methods.



Any help would be great appreciated. I'm able to give you Remote Control of the server and test account usernames and passwords should you need it.

I don't have the new iMac, but I did setup an Exchange account using Office 2008 on a brand new MBP w/ 10.6. I know it's not the exact same hardware/drivers then, but I am pressed to verify that the settings are at least correct.



Have you connected to this Exchange account before, using Entourage? (on any Mac).



the Exchange Server field needs to hit a certain location of the server, b/c of WebDAV issues.



For Example: https://ex.company.com/exchange/username



[where ex.company.com would the the location of the exchange server, and username would be your username]



If you're positive the settings are good, and/or you've done it before, let me know. I'm asking this b/c in my experience, ERROR - 17900

means authentication error.

So what are the steps to create this signature block?

The first step is to open Microsoft Outlook, if you don’t know how to do this then this tutorial probably isn’t for you. Once the program is opened then you will go to the blue tool bar at the top and click Tools. This will bring up the drop down menu where you will want to select the option labeled Options, which will open a new window with tabs across the top. In this new window with the tabs you will want to select the Mail Format tab.

Now you are in the Compose in this message formation options, you can choose three different message formats, HTML, Rich Text, and Plain Text. The most common option is HTML which will display your email in a manner consistent with a webpage. If you chose Rich Text it will allow for formatting of text, such as colorful text. Plain text is just the ordinary everyday text nothing fancy at all. I am choosing the HTML format.

Once you have selected what format you want your text in you need to click the button at the bottom labeled Signature, and a new window will come up with new options. Since we are starting a brand new signature the only option will to select will be New, so click on the button and lets get started.

You will need to name you signature block, I am going to use TEST as my signature block name. Now you have the option to start with a blank signature or use a file as a template. We will just want a blank signature block and can ignore the other option. Click next after you have given your signature block a name, the next window is where you will enter the information you want to display as your signature block. Most people start with their name, then title, then address, phone, and finally email address.

You can make this anyway you want there are no rules to it, make it look and feel the way you want it. You have many features that will let you add color or different styles of text, the buttons Font, Paragraph, and Advanced will allow you to edit the text, these options are not available if you use plain text as your message format. The advanced button will take you to Word to edit the signature block and you can use all the features of Word to create a signature block. Once you have your signature block the way you want it then you can click the OK option.

Now to apply your signature block to you emails you have to click OK to exit the wizard. You are now back at the Mail Format tab and you can append the signature by two drop down boxes, Signature for new messages and Signature for replies and forwards. In these two drop downs just select the name you gave your signature block and now every email you send will have the information we created. You can create multiple signature blocks and have different signatures for new messages and for replies/forwards.

Well hope this helps you to create some fun and useful signature blocks for work and play. I have included screen shots so you see the steps which sometimes is easier than just reading and doing them.

Is your Outlook Express Email a mess? Is everything unorganized? Well, in this tutorial I will show you how to organize your Outlook Express Email by creating folder and sub folders. You can create as many folders and sub folders that you need to keep your email organized. So let"s begin. Go ahead and open your Outlook Express.

How to Organize your Outlook Express Email

You should see your folders to the left of your screen. The original folders are Inbox, Outbox, Sent Items, and Delete. Now you can create new folders to place your emails in. You could create a folder for important emails, friend emails, family emails, or whatever you need. That is just an example.

There are a couple of ways that you can create these new folders. I will show you both ways.

1.) Click File > New > Folder at the top of your Outlook Express. You can also press CTRL + Shift + E on your keyboard to create a new folder. This is the keyboard shortcut. Now you should be looking at the Create Folder dialog box. Enter the name of the folder in the first field. Next, click the Local Folder one time to highlight it. Then click the OK button. Now you should see your new folder in the left side of the screen.

2.) You can also right click on the Local Folder, in the left side of your screen, and click New Folder. The Create Folder window will pop up. Type the name of the new folder in the first field. Then click the Local Folder one time in the next field. Then click the OK button. Now you should see your new folder in the left part of your screen.

So that is the two ways to create a new folder. Well I guess it is three ways if you count the keyboard shortcut. Go ahead and make the folders that you need. Once you have created all of your folders, move on to the next part of this tutorial.

Next, I will show you how to move the emails to the folders. There are a couple of ways to do this too.

1.) You can click one time on the email and drag it to the folder that you want to place it in. So, once you click the email, continue to hold the mouse down and drag the mouse to the folder. The folder will turn blue once you drag the mouse over it. When the folder turns blue, let the mouse go.

2.) Right click one time on the email that you want to move. A box will drop down, click move to folder. The Move dialog box will pop up, click the folder that you want to move that email too.

Since this is the first time that you are organizing your email, you probably have a lot of emails to sort through. There is a quicker way to move the emails instead of moving them one by one. If you have a lot of emails to move to one folder, then follow these steps. Click one time one email. Hold down the CTRL key and click the next email. Continue holding down the CTRL key until you have all the emails highlighted. Then drag the emails to the folder or right click on one of the emails and move it that way.

A restore point is a certain time that the computer has a file stored with all the information recorded about settings and important things about the computer. These are stored for just the time when you have changed things on your computer and can't figure out how to undo things that didn't work quite as you planned. This is a system that Microsoft has installed as part of Windows to help people undo things on their computers. It will not erase or delete any files but instead just sets all computer and registry settings back to an earlier time, your data and files, pictures and addresses are not touched. This is performed from the help and support sections restore.

A Windows system recovery is a system tool that reinstalls the windows operating files and system files over the top of the current and existing files already on your hard disk drive. A recovery can be done from the system recovery disk or from the manufacturer's installed recovery program that most computer manufacturers' include as a program on the program list of the start menu.

A system recovery with a format will wipe everything off your hard drive and erase all the information, files and settings of your computer and restore your computer to it's factory shipped condition. This will not save anything but some settings of installed hardware, maybe. That is the important part of it though, it may save some of the drivers of hardware that is installed, or install them as part of it's initial startup from a stock of drivers on Windows XP. But the important thing to know between a restore, recovery and a destructive or format recovery is that a restore just turns the settings back a little in time, a recovery reloads windows files, and a format or destructive recovery erases the drive and reloads everything to original.

When you perform a format recovery or destructive recovery you will not have any files, systems settings, pictures, data, or even bookmarks or email addresses that were on your computer after the recovery. This is why it is important to do a few things before you perform a system recovery, and especially a destructive recovery. You will need to save any important files, pictures, addresses and bookmarks to reinstall later for your different programs. You can save these to a disk or zip disk but the easiest way to do this costs a little bit more but is the safest and best way, you backup files and such with an external or second hard drive.

There are some drives that are low cost drives for around $50, Western Digital is a large company of computer and especially disk drives and has some good economical hard drives. I use two drives, it sounds like a costly deal but I got a good price on both of them, they were ones that the stores were not only having a sale on but had rebates as well. I use the first external hard drive as the drive for my files, pictures and any thing I want to save on, this is my working storage area. I have shortcuts to files on my desktop and any files each person who uses my computer wants to save use these folders that are on the external drive. I have another external drive with a program from the manufacturer that automatically backs up my first external drive once a week. On Friday when I get up I turn on my computer and the external drives and at 8:00 the program backs up the first drive, it takes less than a half hour, copying files that have not already been copied previously by looking at the dates the files have been modified and copying any that have been used since the last back up.

If you go on the premise that all electronic and computer components will someday die, or whatever, it makes sense to backup a working drive or computer with one that you will not be using very much, once a week in my case. Now on to bigger and better things. The things you can do before the recover is kind of frustrating, troubleshooting problems on your computer can be hard to figure out and perform. If you are having some kind of problems with your computer try searching Google for it, type exactly what the computer is doing into Google and see what the results are, maybe others have had the same problem and you can get some help that way. Of course you should search the Microsoft help section for answers, and some others like Annoyances.org http://www.annoyances.org/ ,PC Guide http://www.pcguide.com/ts/ and your documentation that came with your computer as well as any help and support sections on your computer. So many sites can help if you know the questions to ask, that is why the best way is to search for the exact thing your computer is doing for other people who have had the same thing happen to them. Now on to the recovery, if after you find no help from any troubleshooting and need to do a recovery, don't start with the format or destructive recovery unless you are specifically told that is what you need to do. You should always try the lesser of two evils and do the simple recovery. In the same vein I would suggest trying to do a restore before a recovery. I know it's confusing but it can be figured out, just read my article again and if you still have questions try searching your question on Google for some clarity.

In this order then, restore, recovery, and if it still does not work do the destructive or format recovery. Before you do the recovery, backup any files, pictures, and things like your email addresses and bookmarks. Copy things to disks or another drive that you want to keep like pictures and files. For saving things like Outlook Expresses Address book open the Outlook Express and go to Tools, then Address book and if you want to copy them to a disk or drive press export then Address Book, it will ask where you want to export to and you go to the drive the disk is on or just the drive. Or you can just open the Address book and print out the addresses and re input them by hand later if you want. You can do this with bookmarks as well, on your browser, Internet Explorer, go to file, then Import Export and follow the wizard for exporting your favorites. After the install of the new system you use the import to get the files back for your favorites.

You can often find help for this as well by going to sites like annoyances.org, they have a lot of simple questions and answers from people that have had the same things happen to them, the whole site is made up of real people with real problems and the answers that fixed those problems. They have questions to things like settings and how-to's for the simple things as well as the more complex or confusing things for your computer.

I wrote this for your help because I just went through a weekend of computer troubleshooting and nothing worked but the destructive recovery. My son went to some sites when he was looking for lyrics to a song and got on some bad sites. I don't blame him, I blame the sites for not having the security they should have on their servers. But I got all kinds of problems, I think it was a sasser worm but I don't know. I tried to get rid of it and could not detect any worm after I got rid of all the problems that my Pccillin program said I had.

I was getting an error for my Lsass.exe program that I could not get fixed, Lsass.exe is the Local Security Authority Service for Windows system. It is basically a system program that deals with security and log ins to your computer. The sasser worm infects or mimics this program, you can get errors or have programs quite on you when you are trying to use your computer. I was having the problem of my computer shutting down on me when I was trying to use it and used the event log in the control panels administrative tools to find out what was going on. I tried the restore and recovery to no avail, and went with the destructive one but forgot to backup my email's address book and bookmarks. Oops.

There are somethings after the recovery that can be a help when you are reinstalling the files and programs you need to use. First right before you perform the system restore you should disconnect the internet cable from the telephone jack or external modem. Then after the recovery, you first install your antivirus and firewall, then hookup the cable so that you do not get a virus right after the recovery. After the recovery you should make some restore points when you have made a successful recovery, in case something goes wrong while installing programs and such and you want to set your things back some. This is all so the recovery and subsequent installation goes smoother. I created several restore points in the last two days of installing programs, I have a lot on my computer. That way if I get some problem while doing the next program I just go into the help and support section and restore my computer back to another time, and when I created the restore points I labeled them by what I had just done on the computer before that point, i.e. installed windows & virus protect.

Right after you install the system and it works, you should install the virus protection program you will be using and then the next thing is you should update Windows, before installing any other programs. Go right to the update on the bowser and update Windows, after of course setting up your internet and the things your computer needs, but before installing other programs. This way you have the required and recommended security issues that Microsoft has found and the resulting fixes installed and working on your system. Don't go searching on the internet before updating Windows as many security issues they fix and protect are covered by these fixes in the updates.

Many times the troubleshooting is confusing and frustrating, so you need to go about it with a clear head and step back from time to time to catch your breath. I hope this helps any people that are having problems with their computer and if you do need to troubleshoot your computer or do a recovery, follow my steps for a smoother and less frustrating time.
